Tea - Tibetan style

Tibetan tea churn
Woman churning Tibetan tea, Nupri region, Nepal

This woman is churning tea, using implements common throughout the whole of the Tibetan cultural region. Into the wooden cylinder is poured a pot of boiled tea. Yak butter and rock salt are added 'to taste' and the mixture is churned. The resultant brew is not to every Westerner's taste. Think of it as consommé rather than tea and you are off to a good start!

She wears handspun clothing of the Nupri region. The patterns and colours of her heavy woolen back apron, waistband and blouse are typical for Tibetan women of the high valleys behind Manaslu. The coral and turquoise necklace is much less regional, as this style of jewellery is prized by Tibetan women throughout the Himalaya.

One of the delights of our Around Manaslu in 2004 is the opportunity to visit the homes of locals, many of whom we have known for years.
