The nuns from Drakar Taso Gompa, Tibet

nuns from Drakar Taso
Drakar Taso: 'the gals from the gompa' Tibet.

This cheerful group are the entire complement of young nuns from Drakar Taso monastery in the Kyirong valley of Tibet. Together with Ani (nun) Nawang Doma they live in a cluster of tiny stone cottages perched 900m above the valley floor.
Drakar Taso has been a holy place for more than 900 years; sanctified by the great Tibetan saint Mila Repa who meditated alone here for years. Damaged during the Cultural Revolution, the monastery is now rebuilt. Each of the young women is supported in their religious quest by their family. They are a gregarious and friendly bunch. When we visited in May 1999, it was for many their first experience of seeing and talking to Europeans.
