Nyelam and the valley of the Bhote Kosi, Tibet

Nyelam village
Nyelam: the pathway to hell Tibet.

Not many city fathers would be happy to have their town known as the 'Pathway to Hell', but that's what Nyelam means. This lovely valley lies immediately to the north of the Himalaya, sandwiched in between the great mountains of Shishapangma and Menlungtse.
The name refers to the rugged gorge of the Bhote Kosi (Tibet river) seen here in cloud. In the 1960s the Chinese built a road here to link Lhasa with Kathmandu in Nepal. The 'highway' clings tenuously to sheer cliffs over a gorge so narrow that a hearty spit would almost carry across. It was the dangerous trail which preceeded the road that gave Nyelam its name.
