My father the monk, Manaslu region

Nupri, Manaslu region, Nepal

It is quite common in remote regions of Nepal for village monks to be married. This is particularly true for the Nyingmapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The maroon robe worn by this young dad and the two poomba (ritual vessels for holy-water) above his head are pointers to his religious calling. Throughout Nepal and Tibet celebacy is a requirement for monks living in monasteries. Small villages are often hours or days away from such establishments. To serve the religious needs of the community literate young men with a religious interest will learn the scriptures and associated rituals. They officiate at services for the sick or dead and combine with others for more major rituals or if a Lama comes to visit. Most of them are farmers, or herders, with their religious duties having a smaller claim on their daily routine.

If trek with us Around Manaslu in 2004 you are likely to meet such people and, with luck, experience a religious service.
